Name MPO
Function Part of the host defense system of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. It is responsible for microbicidal activity against a wide range of organisms. In the stimulated PMN, MPO catalyzes the production of hypohalous acids, primarily hypochlorous acid in physiologic situations, and other toxic intermediates that greatly enhance PMN microbicidal activity.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is highly expressed in neutrophils and polymorphonuclear luekocytes. MPO is expressed as a dimer in regular neutrophils with a 140kDA. The glycoslated form of MPO has a molecular weight of 92kDa and when undergoes a final glycoslyation, MPO forms subunits of 60kDa and 12kDa. In recent studies, MPO was shown to be involved in the initiation and progression of cardiovascular disease.
