KID (KNSL4; kinesin-like DNA-binding protein) is a member of the kinesin family that is involved in spindle formation and the movements of chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis (1). KID colocalizes with mitotic chromosomes and is enriched in the kinetochore at anaphase. The N-terminal region of KID shares greater than 35% sequence homology with the motor domains of other kinesins. The C-terminal domain has limited but significant homology to NOD, a Drosophila protein and member of the kinesin family. KID also contains a putative nuclear localization signal (2). It was demonstrated that SIAH, a human homologue of the Drosophila seven in absentia (Sina), is involved in the degradation of KID via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (3). It was also reported that KID function is regulated by phosphorylation. Ser427 and Thr463 were identified as M phase-specific phosphorylation sites (4).
