The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of closely related proteolytic enzymes which are involved in the degradation of different components of the extracellular matrix. There is increasing evidence to indicate that individual MMPs have an important role in tumor invasion and tumour spread (1). Matrix Metalloporteinase 8 (MMP-8, Collagenase-2, Neutrophil Collagenase) functions mainly to degrade fibrillar type I, II, and III collagens, serpins, and aggrecan. MMP-8 degrades by cleaving at one specific on the fibrillar collagens with higher cleave activity on type I compared to type III collagens. MMP-8 is expressed in neutrophils, chondrocytes, and gingival fibroblasts (2).
