Neurofilaments (NF) are cytoplasmic intermediate filaments (IFs) found in neurons. NF-66, also known as α-internexin, is a member of the IF family. Classified as a type IV IF, NF-66 is expressed by most neurons and has been shown to co-assemble with other NF triple proteins (light, medium and heavy NF) (1-2). In the adult brain, NF-66 is expressed at relatively low levels compared to the other NF proteins (3). NF-66 has also been shown to assemble into 10mm diameter IF in vitro.
