Isoform 6 predominates in normal adult heart. Isoforms 1, 7 and 8 are expressed in fetal heart. Isoform 7 is also expressed in failing adult heart|

The troponin complex is located on the thin filament of striated muscle and is composed of three component polypeptides: troponin T (TNNT1; TNNT2), troponin I (TNNI1; TNNI2; TNNI3), and troponin C (TNNC) (1). Troponin T type 2 (TNNT2) is a cardiac troponin T isoform expressed in the human heart, that is essential for calcium-regulated myofibrillar ATPase activity (2). Troponin T (TnT) anchors the complex to the thin filaments in vertebrate striated muscle, and functions as a regulatory system for muscle contraction in response to changes to intracellular calcium ion concentration (3). All subunits of Tnnt2 have been associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) (4).
