Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsiblefor the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdividedinto epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This gene encodes aprotein that is expressed in the inner root sheath of hairfollicles. The type II keratins are clustered in a region ofchromosome 12q13.
