Background
This gene encodes glutamate dehydrogenase protein; amitochondrial matrix enzyme that catalyzes the oxidativedeamination of glutamate to alpha-ketoglutarate and ammonia. Thisenzyme has an important role in regulating amino acid inducedinsulin secretion and activating mutations in this gene are acommon cause of congenital hyperinsulinism. This enzyme isallosterically activated by ADP and inhibited by GTP and ATP. Therelated glutamate dehydrogenase 2 gene on the human X-chromosomeoriginated from this gene via retrotransposition and encodes asoluble form of glutamate dehydrogenase. Multiple pseudogenes ofthis gene are present in humans.
