Background
Nitric oxide is a reactive free radical which acts as abiologic mediator in several processes, including neurotransmissionand antimicrobial and antitumoral activities. This gene encodes anitric oxide synthase which is expressed in liver and is inducibleby a combination of lipopolysaccharide and certain cytokines. Threerelated pseudogenes are located within the Smith-Magenis syndromeregion on chromosome 17.
