This gene encodes a mitochondrial short-chaindehydrogenase/reductase, which catalyzes the reduction andoxidation of retinoids. The encoded enzyme may function in retinoicacid production and may also protect the mitochondria againstoxidative stress. Alternatively spliced transcript variants havebeen described.
