This gene encodes a member of the class-I pyridinenucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductase family. This enzyme is ahomodimeric flavoprotein. It is a central enzyme of cellularantioxidant defense, and reduces oxidized glutathione disulfide(GSSG) to the sulfhydryl form GSH, which is an important cellularantioxidant. Rare mutations in this gene result in hereditaryglutathione reductase deficiency. Multiple alternatively splicedtranscript variants encoding different isoforms have been found.
