Background

This gene encodes a homeobox-containing transcriptionfactor that functions in eye development. The gene is expressedearly in the eye primordia, and is required for retinal cell fatedetermination and also regulates stem cell proliferation. Mutationsin this gene have been reported in patients with defects in oculardevelopment, including microphthalmia, anophthalmia, and coloboma.
