Background

This gene encodes a member of the SOX (SRY-relatedHMG-box) family of transcription factors involved in the regulationof embryonic development and in the determination of the cell fate. The encoded protein may act as a transcriptional activator afterforming a protein complex with other proteins. This protein may beinvolved in brain development and function. Haploinsufficiency forthis protein may contribute to the mental retardation found inhaemoglobin H-related mental retardation (ART-16 syndrome).
