Background

This gene is a member of the prenyltransferase family andencodes a protein with geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) synthaseactivity. The enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of GGPP from farnesyldiphosphate and isopentenyl diphosphate. GGPP is an importantmolecule responsible for the C20-prenylation of proteins and forthe regulation of a nuclear hormone receptor. Alternatetranscriptional splice variants, both protein-coding andnon-protein-coding, have been found for this gene. [provided byRefSeq].
