Background
The polyamines putrescine, spermine, and spermidine areubiquitous polycationic mediators of cell growth anddifferentiation. Spermidine synthase is one of four enzymes in thepolyamine-biosynthetic pathway and carries out the final step ofspermidine biosynthesis. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion ofputrescine to spermidine using decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionineas the cofactor.
