The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the transportof phosphate into the mitochondrial matrix, either by protoncotransport or in exchange for hydroxyl ions. The protein containsthree related segments arranged in tandem which are related tothose found in other characterized members of the mitochondrialcarrier family. Both the N-terminal and C-terminal regions of thisprotein protrude toward the cytosol. Multiple alternatively splicedtranscript variants have been isolated.
