Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsiblefor the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdividedinto epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This gene encodes anepithelial keratin that is expressed in skeletal muscle, skin andscalp. The type II keratins are clustered in a region of chromosome12q13.
