Background

This gene encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein whichmediates interaction between newly assembled majorhistocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules and thetransporter associated with antigen processing (TAP), which isrequired for the transport of antigenic peptides across theendoplasmic reticulum membrane. This interaction is essential foroptimal peptide loading on the MHC class I molecule. Up to fourcomplexes of MHC class I and this protein may be bound to a singleTAP molecule. This protein contains a C-terminal double-lysinemotif (KKKAE) known to maintain membrane proteins in theendoplasmic reticulum. This gene lies within the majorhistocompatibility complex on chromosome 6. Alternative splicingresults in three transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
