Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thefibroblast growth factor family. The fibroblast growth factorspossess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and areinvolved in a variety of biological processes including embryonicdevelopment, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumorgrowth and invasion. This gene product is a secreted neurotrophicfactor but lacks a typical signal peptide. It is expressed innormal brain, particularly the cerebellum, and may regulate centralnervous system development and function. Homodimerization of thisprotein was shown to regulate its receptor binding activity andconcentration gradient in the extracellular matrix. Geneticvariations of this gene have been associated with Parkinson diseasesusceptibility.
