Human complement C5a is a 74-amino acid glycopeptide generated during complement activation from the α-chain of complement C5. C5a is a potent chemotactic factor for human peripheral blood neutrophils and monocytes, and is believed to play an important role in a number of inflammatory conditions. The 74 amino acid, human C5a protein expressed in E. coli has an activity similar to that of serum derived C5a based on enzyme assay of myeloperoxidase release.
