Background
BMP7 belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ) superfamily. As implied by their name, BMPs promote and regulate bone development, growth, remodeling and repair, in both prenatal development and postnatal growth of eye, heart, kidney, skin, and other tissues. Based on its expression early in embryogenesis, BMP-7 has a proposed role in early development. In addition, the fact that BMP-7 is closely related to BMP5 has led to speculation of possible bone inductive activity.
