RIMS2 is a Rab effector involved in exocytosis. It may act as a scaffold protein. The mature cytomatrix at the active zone (CAZ) of the synapse is defined by a set of multidomain proteins that harbor several protein–protein or protein–lipid interaction domains. The complete protein composition of the CAZ is not known to date, but it includes the proteins RIMs, Munc13-1, ERC/CAST, Piccolo/Aczonin and Bassoon. RIMs are presynaptic active zone proteins that regulate Ca2+ triggered release of neurotransmitters.
