C-X-C motif chemokine 5Â or ENA-78 is aÂ proteinÂ that in humans is encoded by theÂ CXCL5Â gene. The protein encoded by this gene, CXCL5 is a smallÂ cytokineÂ belonging to the CXCÂ chemokineÂ family. It is produced following stimulation of cells with the inflammatory cytokinesÂ interleukin-1Â orÂ tumor necrosis factor-alpha.Â Expression of CXCL5 has also been observed ineosinophils, and can be inhibited with the type IIÂ interferonÂ IFN-Î³. This chemokine stimulates the chemotaxis of neutrophils possessingÂ angiogenicÂ properties. It elicits these effects by interacting with the cell surfaceÂ chemokine receptorÂ CXCR2.Â TheÂ geneÂ for CXCL5 is encoded on fourÂ exonsÂ and is located on humanÂ chromosome 4Â amongst several other CXC chemokine genes.Â CXCL5 has been implicated in connective tissue remodelling.Â Also, CXCL5 has been described to regulate neutrophil homeostasis.
