Function | Substrate recognition component of a SCF (SKP1-CUL1-F-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex which mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins. Probably recognizes and binds to phosphorylated target proteins during skeletal muscle atrophy. Recognizes TERF1 (By similarity). |

Background
Atrogin-1 (Atr1) is also known as Muscle Atrophy F-box (MAFbx). It is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that initiates ATPdependent ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis and promotes muscle atrophy. MAFbx is approximately a 43kDa protein.
