HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) is the rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol biosynthesis. HMGCR is regulated via a negative feedback mechanism mediated by sterols and non-sterol metabolites derived from the product of the reductase reaction. Statin, a class of cholesterol-lowering dr µgs inhibits HMGCR by lowering plasma cholesterol.
