Name | RNF121 |
---|---|
Function | E3 ubiquitin ligase which accepts ubiquitin and transfers it to substrates thereby promoting their degradation by the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway which is a pathway involved in ubiquitin-dependent degradation of misfolded endoplasmic reticulum proteins (By similarity). May regulate the unfolded protein response to reduce endoplasmic reticulum stress (By similarity). |
Cellular Location | Endoplasmic reticulum membrane {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q09251}; Multi-pass membrane protein |

Background
RNF121 is an evolutionarily conserved E3 ligase ring finger protein that is expressed in the endoplasmic reticulum (1). It acts downstream of the unfolded protein response regulator protein kinase-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK). Overexpression of RNF121 during the early stages of gonad development led to aberrations in germline development and gonad migration, suggesting that it plays a role in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation machinery (1).
