Background
This gene is an immediate early gene that encodes aprotein related to interferon-gamma. This protein may function as atranscriptional co-activator/repressor that controls the growth anddifferentiation of specific cell types during embryonic developmentand tissue regeneration. Mutations in this gene are associated withsensory/motor neuropathy with ataxia. This gene may also beinvolved in modulating the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis lungdisease. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcriptvariants.
