Background
COL18A1 is the alpha chain of type XVIII collagen.This collagen is one of the multiplexins, extracellular matrixproteins that contain multiple triple-helix domains (collagenousdomains) interrupted by non-collagenous domains. Theproteolytically produced C-terminal fragment of type XVIII collagenis endostatin, a potent antiangiogenic protein. Mutations in thisgene are associated with Knobloch syndrome. The main features ofthis syndrome involve retinal abnormalities, so type XVIII collagenmay play an important role in retinal structure and in neural tubeclosure.
