Background

This gene encodes a small peptide hormone that is secretedby cells of the small intestine to regulate gastrointestinalcontractions and motility. Proteolytic processing of the secretedprotein produces the mature peptide and a byproduct referred to asmotilin-associated peptide (MAP). Three transcript variantsencoding different preproprotein isoforms but the same maturepeptide have been found for this gene.
