Function | Microtubule-based molecular motor that transport intracellular cargos, such as vesicles, organelles and protein complexes. Uses ATP hydrolysis to generate force to bind and move along the microtubule (By similarity). Plays a role in cilia formation (PubMed:32386558). Involved in photoreceptor integrity and opsin trafficking in rod photoreceptors (PubMed:32386558). Transports vesicles containing N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit GRIN2A into neuronal dendrites (By similarity). |
Cellular Location | Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton. Cell projection, cilium {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q61771}. Cell projection, dendritic spine {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q61771} |

Background
The protein encoded by this gene acts as a heterodimerwith kinesin family member 3A to aid in chromosome movement duringmitosis and meiosis. The encoded protein is a plus end-directedmicrotubule motor and can interact with the SMC3 subunit of thecohesin complex. In addition, the encoded protein may be involvedin the intracellular movement of membranous organelles. Thisprotein and kinesin family member 3A form the kinesin II subfamilyof the kinesin superfamily.
