Background

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thefibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possessbroad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in avariety of biological processes including embryonic developmentcell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth andinvasion. This growth factor is a high affinity, heparin dependentligand for FGFR4. Expression of this gene was detected only infetal but not adult brain tissue. Synergistic interaction of thechick homolog and Wnt-8c has been shown to be required forinitiation of inner ear development.
