Background
Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells that resorb bone andare essential for bone homeostasis. This gene encodes anosteoclast-associated receptor (OSCAR), which is a member of theleukocyte receptor complex (LRC) protein family that plays criticalroles in the regulation of both innate and adaptive immuneresponses. Different from the other LRC members, OSCAR expressionis detected specifically in preosteoclasts or mature osteoclasts.OSCAR may be an important bone-specific regulator of osteoclastdifferentiation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variantsencoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
